NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People with severe asthma who are allergic to fungal organisms benefit substantially from treatment with the anti-fungal drug itraconazole, new research shows. HealthTo check out this strategy, a trial was conducted in the UK involving patients who needed high doses of steroids to control their asthma and who were sensitive to at least one of seven common types of fungi Dr David W. Denning at the University Hospital of South Manchester and colleagues report the results in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.Ultimately, the analysis included 18 patients assigned to itraconazole and 23 assigned to an inactive placebo pill. After 32 weeks, the score on a standard asthma-related quality-of-life questionnaire showed a significantly greater improvement in the itraconazole group than the placebo group. However, the scores reverted to their baseline levels following completion of the trial, indicating that "continuing antifungal therapy beyond 8 months is important for maintaining quality of life in these patients," the investigators say.Denning's group concludes, "The magnitude of the antifungal effect on symptoms of asthma seen in this study is promising."SOURCE: American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, January 1, 2009. By Svea Herbst-Bayliss Global Markets Funds News ETFs News BOSTON, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Investment manager PaoloPellegrini has left Paulson & Co, which he had helped transforminto one of the industry's most successful hedge fund firms bybetting the housing bubble would burst. Pellegrini, who co-managed Paulson & Co's creditopportunities funds, resigned on Dec. 31, a spokesman for theNew York-based company said on Monday, describing the departureas an amicable split.

Pellegrini plans to set up his own hedge fund, managing hisown money for a few months before taking in outsiders' cash, said a person who is familiar with his plans but not authorizedto speak publicly about them. Pellegrini has been closely linked to Paulson & Co'ssuccess, but the spokesman said the firm had many top analysts, suggesting it could take his departure in stride. Paulson & Co manages roughly $36 billion and ranks as oneof the world's biggest hedge fund firms. Founder John Paulson, along with Pellegrini, defiedconventional wisdom by betting in 2006 that housing pricescould decline on a national level and that investors hadovervalued mortgage-backed securities. In doing so, the pairturned the medium-sized firm into an industry giant. Pellegrini is the only person to leave Paulson & Co in2008, the firm's spokesman said, noting that it has roughly 80employees. John Paulson became the hedge fund industry's top earner in2007 when he took home an estimated $3 billion.
